Storyline :
The drama is an adaptation of the novel "Mo Dao Zu Shi" by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu where the story focuses on BL (Boy Love). But due to China's censorship , the plot of TheUntamed was adapted to bromance, which for me , gave an even better portrayal of the love between the protagonists.
The plotline follows the journey of Wei Wuxian, the YiLing Patriarch (also known as Wei Ying) and his soulmate Lan Wang Ji through his descent from a young promising cultivator to the practitioner of dark arts and his eventual death in the battle of the Nightless City. Throughout this, Lan Wang Ji (Hanguang Jun)(also known as Lan Zhan) unsuccessfully strives to persuade him to give up his practices.
16 years later , the spirit of Wei Ying is brought back into the body of Mo XuanYu. All these years, Lan Zhan never gives up looking for him. They are eventually reunited through the song Wei Ying plays which Lan zhan recognizes. Since then, they face challenges together to solve the current line of murders and clear Wei Ying's name for the murders he was wrongfully accused of 16 years back.
Verdict:
I am someone who is literally a hardcore romance addict. Never did I think, I would be so in love with a drama based on Friendship. Its been 2-3 months since I finished this series , but I'm still unsure as to how to move on from this. I did try watching other dramas but somehow I keep coming back to this.
I am totally and utterly in love with Wei Ying and Lan Zhan. The two characters are so different from each other yet when put together, they’re the perfect pair. They make you feel so many emotions. Their expressions along with the soft and soul soothing sound tracks are to die for. The unspoken love between them was brought to life by their stares , smiles and soft glances.
Wang YiBo does an excellent job as the cold, distant Lan Wang Ji through his through his eyes and expressions. His portrayal of the Lan WangJi's longing and affection for his soulmate was exceptional.
Xiao Zhan on the other hand plays the role of the playful and rebellious Wei Wuxian, who takes up demonic cultivation to protect his family and friends, to perfection. No one could have played the roles better than them
Best part about this series was that everyone, from the main leads to the villains, had a complete backstory which pretty much explained the complex characters and their story development though out the series. Every character screwed up someway or the other and had to pay with something dear to them. It ensured the message that even the good guys are capable of terrible deeds and the villains can have redeeming moments.
Another aspect I loved, were the outfits. There's something about guys in robes and swords which is addictive . The outfits were well defined as part of the story and distinguishing between clans and characters. Wei Ying robes changed from White to Black once he moved to demonic cultivation . Lan Zhan in his pristine white robes emphasized his strict adherence to truth and justice and "being where ever the chaos is".
I would really really recommend this series. For me, this has been the best tv series I've ever watched so far. An absolute perfection.
