My foray into Personal Finance

While filling out the form for my first salary account , I mistakenly checked a box referring to something called Recurring Deposit. Coming fresh out of college , I had no clue about savings or investments . Our education system teaches us a lot about angles and theories and age old wars , but when it comes to stuff for survival , NOT A WORD.

Basic finances was something really missing in my learnings .

So month end , when I was got my first salary , it was short by 2k . That was when I googled Recurring Deposit and ended up with my first lesson in investment. When you are young and starting out, even a small amount a month matters. A year later, I ended up with a tidy amount which I was gifted to my father . Coming from a middle class family , that was a milestone for me. That's what initially motivated me towards learning more about finances . I also knew , being financially independent was key towards overall self growth and independence. So I took the onus was talking to people , researching basic financial terms . It was huge task to learn everything from scratch.

Many a times , people didn't take me seriously because I was a woman. I remember talking to a professional financial advisor regarding starting few mutual funds and the first question he asked me was if he could talk to my father or husband. In India , its often fathers and husbands who are supposed to take up the role and if couples steer from that arrangement , they are duly judged by people around. Even when I took over finances for my household post marriage , several well wishers approached my husband to question his judgement of letting me handle all money related decisions.

But we stuck to our decision and it worked great for us. He could focus on his career and I took care of all the investments and taxes.

My journey started a few years back and today I'm proud of myself to have come this far. From share market to crypto, all seem a bit more easier.

So girlies , never let people tell you you can't excel at money matters. Its just about taking it a lesson at a time.

Wishing you Good luck for your journey.
